One of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint, get healthy and stay fabulous! is to ride your bicycle and get out of that automobile.
Yes, owning and maintaining a bicycle isn't a zero-sum game with regards to waste. It is possible, however, to over-think and over-worry about things, so here's a new program available to you that might alleviate any niggling worries you might have about what to do with your inner tubes when you’ve patched them so much they look like great-grandma’s favorite quilt. If you've run out of uses for worn (and hole-riddled) inner tubes around the house you can also recycle them.
A Pennsylvania company located in Pittsburgh, Liberty Tire Recycling, has teamed up with Performance Bicycle to offer a collection point for used tires. You can find a store locator here. The sad part of our tale is that there are NO stores in South Carolina. Save up your tires (and those of your fellow bikers) and the next time you take a trip to Charlotte or to Atlanta you can drop them off. Tubes brought to participating locations (and you should always double check before heading out) will gain you $5.00 for each tube returned.
Since South Carolina does not have any Performance Bicycle stores, you might want to try to encourage your local bike shops to contact Liberty Tire Recycling to see if they can’t join the program.
