A Visual Environmental Lesson
In recognition of Earth Day 2010, the students at Rice Creek Elementary School conducted a school-wide "Cafeteria Experiment" that was designed to give students the opportunity to see how much trash they threw away at lunch each day.
The Environmental Engineers, the school's recycling club, led the effort. After the third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students finished their lunch, they counted the pieces of trash that were discarded. The Environmental Engineers tallied the data and gave each student a paper clip for each piece of trash. Each class constructed a paper clip chain that was combined with those of the other classes. Students linked more than two-thousand-three-hundred paper clips, a total length of three-hundred-sixty-five-feet. The chain, providing a visual representation of the amount of trash that's sent to the landfill each day, was on display in the hallway. Rice Creek's eFIT Magnet Program focuses on the environment, fitness and technology and provides many opportunities for students to examine their personal impact on the environment.
